Heavy precipitation insurance
This section provides the insurance context for hail, snow, and ice events in the Netherlands.
Hail
Hail damage to property is covered by most Dutch private home insurance policies. Similarly, businesses are insured for hail-related damages to roofs, premises, inventory, supplies, and business interruptions. However, damages caused by poor maintenance are excluded.
For vehicles, hail damage is covered under hull or all-risk insurance for both private and company cars. Agricultural businesses can opt for traditional hail insurance or a broad weather insurance policy (PDF) to protect crops against hail damage.
Snow and ice
In the Netherlands, most private home insurance policies cover snow and frost related damages, while business can opt for similar coverage. This coverage includes burst pipes, roof and content damage from snow pressure, and wall damage from snow or creeping ice (although the latter hardly occurs). However, poor maintenance can void coverage, and business generally cannot claim damages to fences or on-premises materials due to snow pressure or creeping ice.
Agricultural businesses may cover crop damage from snow and ice through broad weather insurance (PDF), similar to hail events. For vehicles, hull or all-risk insurance covers accidents on icy roads, related injuries, and vehicle damage if a garage roof collapses under snow.
