Assumptions & limitations for storm

The datasets provide an initial national estimate of the impact of winter storms. The risk model was validated using historical storms and reported losses; the overall results were reasonably consistent. However, more detailed calculations could produce better results.

Consider the following assumptions and limitations when using the datasets:

  • The risk estimates shown are only for residential buildings. There are no estimates for the content, commercial, infrastructure, vehicles, indirect damage, or other type of asset.
  • The hazard maps are based on current climate, therefore the risk estimates likewise remain current.
  • The datasets exclude storm tracks. Other methods employ probabilistic approaches that consider the various realisations of storm tracks. The storm's track is important in determining the expected damage based on the exposed assets for a specific storm.
