Access to storm data

For storms, we refer to two datasets that are hosted on the Climate Impact Atlas. These include the gust intensity and wind force probability datasets. Please refer to the Assumptions & limitations page for more information about the datasets.

Gust intensity

Gust intensity
Data owner Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (hosted on the Climate Impact Atlas)
Data access
  • Gust intensity maps 10 year return period
  • Gust intensity map 100 year return period
Description The gust intensity maps show the expected strength of wind gusts across the Netherlands during the winter months (October to March). They are based on historical weather data and statistical analysis of wind gusts for storms that occur on average every 10 years or every 100 years. More information can be found on the Climate Impact Atlas map narrative.
Available time horizons
  • Return period of 1:10 years
  • Return period of 1:100 years
Available climate scenarios Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute’s (KNMI) climate scenarios from 2014 (KNMI’14).
Year produced 2025
Spatial resolution 2600 x 2650 metres

Wind force probability

Wind force probability
Data owner
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (hosted on the Climate Impact Atlas)
Data access
  • Annual probability wind force 8
  • Annual probability wind force 9
  • Annual probability wind force 10
  • Annual probability wind force 11
Description

The Wind Force Probability maps show the annual likelihood of experiencing strong winds classified using the Beaufort scale. These maps provide insight into how likely strong storms are each year.

More information can be found on the Climate Impact Atlas map narrative.
