Atlas Natural Capital

Atlas Natural Capital (in Dutch: Atlas Natuurlijk Kapitaal) is a map‐based platform showing where and how the Netherlands’ natural resources—soil, water, air and subsurface—deliver services such as drinking water, food production and carbon storage. The atlas equips policymakers, developers, and financial and environmental professionals with ready insights into where investing in natural capital can boost resilience, biodiversity and qualify of life.

What does the atlas offer?

The atlas provides over 100 interactive map layers that pinpoint ecosystem types and quantify services like pollination, wood production, water retention and urban cooling. Besides that, practical case studies and inspiring examples that illustrate how nature underpins water safety, sustainable agriculture and city greening can be found on the atlas, as well as valuation tools to estimate the societal and economic benefits of green and blue infrastructure.

Who developed the atlas?

The atlas is designed and maintained by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment as part of the Environmental Health Atlas suite.
