Climate Damage Monitor

The Climate Damage Monitor is an application that shows how extreme weather events translate into insured losses. It is developed for professionals, government officials, insurers, researchers—as well as residents and businesses.

What does the portal offer?

On the portal you can explore annual insured damage from 2007 through 2021 caused by hail, storms, heavy precipitation, lightning, flooding and frost. Damage totals are broken down by weather type, by region (province or municipality) and by sector (for example, home-related insurances versus motor vehicle cover). Interactive charts let you compare years, drill into individual events and download the data for your own analysis.

Who developed the monitor?

The monitor was developed by the Data Analytics Centre of the Dutch Association of Insurers (in Dutch: Verbond van Verzekeraars). It is part of a wider collaboration that includes Wageningen University & Research, several Dutch provinces and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI).
